David Geringas
David Geringas (Vilnius, Lithuania 1946), cellist, conductor, and founder of a youth orchestra, the Geringas Chamber Orchestra, is one of the most influential musicians of our time. He is considered a true bridge between the Eastern European and Western cello traditions. A pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory and winner of the gold medal at the 1970 Tchaikovsky Competition, he has received prestigious awards throughout his career, including two Echo Klassik awards and the Grand Prix du Disque for the recordings of Boccherini’s twelve cello concertos conducted by Bruno Giuranna.
Prominent contemporary composers have dedicated several works to him, and his discography includes more than 120 recordings.
For years he has devoted himself to teaching, and his legendary cello class has included students such as Gustav Rivinius, Jens Peter Maintz, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Monica Leskovar, Tatiana Vassiljeva, Jing Zhao, Johannes Moser, Maximilian Hornung, and Sol Gabetta. Since 2005 he has taught at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. In 2023, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Classical Music Awards, being described as “a passionate musician, a brilliant mind, an example of what the world of music needs in these difficult times in which we live.”

David Geringas, Lithuanian cellist trained by Mstislav Rostropovich, has brought to life a vast repertoire spanning three centuries, with a special focus on Baltic and contemporary music. He has collaborated with Sofia Gubaidulina, Pēteris Vasks, and Erkki-Sven Tüür, helping to shape and expand the modern cello repertoire.
