Alberto Bocini

Stauffer Artist Programme - Contrabbasso

Biography

Alberto Bocini has been teaching double bass at the HEM – Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva since 2009.

He was first double bass for five years in the National Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and for 15 years in the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. He has collaborated in the same role with numerous other orchestras, including La Scala in Milan, I Solisti Veneti and the London Symphony Orchestra.

His passion for musical contaminations have led him to take an interest in numerous ‘crossover’ projects:
a founding member of the double bass quartet ‘the Bass Gang’ whose repertoire is absolutely cross-genre, ranging from rock to jazz to tango to classical, recording three albums and a DVD.

His projects with his friend pianist Alessandro Cavicchi: TheCryme of Selling Lambs, an album of transcriptions for cb and piano of Genesis, the famous progressive rock group; Al Basso l’Opera, an album dedicated to Italian opera music revisited in a modern key (rock, jazz, ragtime).

But it is above all in the composition for his own instrument where his crossover inspiration finds its greatest fulfilment: numerous pieces for solo cb (among them the Tre Piccoli Pezzi, the Ballate, the Variazioni su Bottesini), up to the recent works with orchestra “XUITE-0, suite modulare per contrabbasso e orchestra”; “SLIDING DOORS, for violin, double bass, orchestra and cell phone ringtones” and the “CONCERTO per cb e orchestra d’archi”.

2020 saw the publication of the Album Bass on Fire, which features pieces of his own composition alongside J.S. Bach’s Suite in G major for solo cello.

In 2021, he returned to a more traditional repertoire for his instrument with the album ‘mio caro Bottesini’, which he produced together with pianist Alessandra Ammara, as a fitting tribute to the great double bass virtuoso on the occasion of the bicentenary of his birth.
