Ermanno Calzolari


Ermanno Calzolari graduated with top honors from the “Domenico Cimarosa” Conservatory in Avellino, studying under M° Plinio Bologna. He furthered his studies with M° Franco Petracchi at the Fiesole Music School and the “Walter Stauffer” Academy in Cremona.

A refined interpreter of his instrument, he has had an extensive concert career in chamber music, spanning from baroque to contemporary works, collaborating with international artists such as Salvatore Accardo, Franco Petracchi, Rocco Filippini, Sergio Azzolini, and Radovan Vlatković.

As a soloist, he toured with the Double Bass Quartet alongside Franco Petracchi and Gary Karr. Currently, he continues his solo career performing in duo with Salvatore Accardo. A winner of numerous competitions, he served as Principal Double Bass for the Petruzzelli Theater Orchestra in Bari, the RAI Alessandro Scarlatti Orchestra in Naples, the Teatro Massimo Orchestra in Catania, the Tuscany Orchestra, the Swiss Radio Orchestra in Lugano, and the “Arturo Toscanini” Philharmonic. He held the role of Principal Double Bass at the San Carlo Theater in Naples for 23 years.

Invited by Salvatore Accardo, he is currently Principal Double Bass of the Italian Chamber Orchestra (OCI), with which he tours major concert halls in Italy and around the world (United States, South America, China, Korea, Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Morocco). In 2022, he received the “Oltre l’orizzonte” career award, with the Medal of the Presidency of the Republic and the sponsorship of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Chamber of Deputies.

He is a Double Bass professor at the “San Pietro a Majella” Conservatory in Naples. He is also preparing a paper on the history and pedagogy of double bass in Naples, focusing on key figures, teachers, students, musical activities, repertoires, and instruments, under the Conservatory’s auspices.
